Presbyterians and Potluck Meals

I am sure by the subject this, you may have thought there was some kind of joke involved! Well this is one pastor who does not believe that food is a laughing matter, but actually a rather spiritual one. Food has always played a central role to the life of the church, from the communion table to coffee and donuts, and of course potluck meals. During the season of Lent and Easter our church in particular places a great deal of importance on our eating together and sharing fellowship around the table.
I realize the idea of a potluck can be intimidating for some, perhaps you don’t cook or you have physical limitations that don’t permit you to spend the time cooking that you once did. For others it may be an issue of time, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. Whatever the reason, I would like to offer a few suggestions to help lower your anxiety around deciding what to bring, so everyone can feel welcomed. and excited about sharing these meals together as a family of faith. I encourage you to print this and give a copy to others who may not be “connected” via email.

Potluck Tips

Tip #1: Fast Food

From Kentucky Fried Chicken to a couple of pizza’s, there is always room for these at the potluck table. Duck out after the postlude, it always takes extra time for us to set up and plenty of time for you to grab something warm and yummy.

Tip #2: Grocery Store Deli/Bakery

Both Walmart and VG’s have a large selection of already prepared salads and breads. Pick up a large container and transfer it to a bowl from home (no one will ever know!)

Tip #3: Dessert

The same goes for dessert. Cookies, cakes, and pie, how are we going to know they aren’t home made?

Tip #4: Freshness Counts

No one ever said that what you bring has to be cooked. Fresh fruit plates, raw veggies with dip, a salad in a bag with a bottle of dressing. Not only are these easy but they are healthy too. Quite often the grocery stores will do the work for you, look in the refrigerated section for prepared fruit and veggie trays.

Tip #5: Beverages

We love the food, but need something to wash it down! Pick up a few bottles of soda or juice that are a welcome additions to our meals.

The next time you see a “potluck” meal on the church calender, please don’t feel like you have to skip that event just because you are worried about what you might bring. Remember these suggestions and surely we will be blessed by good food and company knowing you are there!

Passing the Peace of Potlucking!
